Hardwood flooring not only adds a natural warmth to your home, it can also be a great way to increase the value of your home. There are many different styles of hardwood flooring to choose from, including domestic, exotic, hand-sculpted, distressed and wire-brushed.

Choosing the Correct Construction

Hardwood flooring can be installed on any level of your home, and it’s available in a number of constructions to allow for flexible installation over different subfloors in a variety of spaces.

Mullican Flooring offers six constructions of hardwood floors to address each primary type of subfloor and budget:

3/4-inch Solid
1/2-inch Engineered
3/8-inch Engineered
5/16-inch Engineered
G-5 Engineered Locking

When choosing a construction style, you need to ask some important questions:

1.) What is the subfloor?

Solid flooring can be installed only on plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and wood subfloors, while engineered flooring can be installed only on plywood, OSB, wood and CONCRETE subfloors. These questions are very important in determining what type of floor can be installed in your house.

Engineered flooring has been designed for installation over concrete to help mitigate potential moisture issues. Engineered flooring is not one solid piece of wood. Instead, it features cross-layer construction that is designed to reduce expansion. Engineered flooring can be glued down, while solid flooring can only be nailed or stapled.

2.) Where do you want to install your hardwood flooring?

Not all hardwood floors are the same. For example, engineered flooring can be installed on all levels (upstairs, ground level and basements), while solid flooring can be installed only on grade (ground level) and above grade (upstairs).

Solid flooring cannot be installed in basements because these areas tend to have more moisture and solid flooring does not perform well in high-moisture areas. In addition, most basements have a concrete floor, and hardwood flooring cannot be glued down.

Locking Floors

A locking or floating floor is an engineered floor, but with the added advantage of our G-5 locking tongue-and-groove system. It is the perfect do-it-yourself flooring solution and can be installed on any level of the home.

Choosing Your Style

Mullican Flooring offers a wide selection of flooring species, textures and colors to suit almost everyone’s taste and style. When choosing a hardwood floor that is right for you, consider the following factors:

Species

Mullican Flooring offers domestic species such as oak, maple, American cherry, hickory and walnut, along with exotic species such as Brazilian cherry, cumaru, andiroba and tigerwood. Each species has a distinct grain pattern. For example, oak has a distinguished grain, while maple is very subtle. Different species also have varying degrees of hardness. If your floors are expected to take a lot of abuse, consider a hard-surface species such as red oak.

Janka Hardness Rating

The relative hardness of wood species is measured using the Janka Hardness Rating. This test measures the force needed to embed a steel ball (.444 inch in diameter) to half its diameter in a piece of 3/4-inch solid wood being tested – the higher the number, the harder the wood and the more resistant to indentations.

Color

Mullican Flooring offers a variety of color options in domestic and exotic floors. Traditional hardwood colors are natural, gunstock, caramel and saddle. Mullican also features a variety of subtle and dramatic colors. Exotic and nature collections offer a range of coloring, while many exotic and some domestic species are photosensitive and need exposure to sunlight to achieve their desired rich color.

Width

Traditional floors across the United States have always been 2 1/4-inch width solid flooring, but in recent years floors more than three inches in width have been gaining in popularity. Wider widths showcase the natural beauty of the wood. Widths can easily change the look of the flooring – the wider the plank, the fewer the seams that can be in the floor. When choosing a width of flooring, consider the size of the space. Traditional 2 1/4-inch flooring in a small space can make the room seem larger.

Texture

Mullican offers a wide range of textures, including wire-brushed, distressed and hand-sculpted. Master craftsmen form hand-sculpted and distressed floors by hand to create a truly unique floor.

Choosing Your Installation

G-5 Locking

This is an excellent do-it-yourself product because nails, staples and glue are not required. You simply lock the planks together.

Glue

Gluing involves troweling glue on the floor and setting the planks into the glue.

Nail

Nailing involves driving a nail at an angle through the tongue of the hardwood floor into the wood subfloor. The nail is then hidden by the groove in the next row of boards.

Staple

This process is similar to nailing but with staples.

Prefinished Floor vs. Unfinished Floor

Until recent decades, unfinished flooring was a popular choice to install in homes. Unfinished flooring allows users to customize the flooring finish, style and color. However, prefinished hardwood floors have now become more popular for new construction and remodeled homes, because they are less messy to install. Sanding is not required for prefinished floors, since they arrive already stained and finished. No finish sealant is required, and eliminating this step also reduces installation costs. Prefinished floors or factory-finished floors are topped with a coating that is stronger than most site-applied finishes. Coordinated moldings may be stained and finished to match prefinished flooring selections.

Grade

The wood’s appearance determines its grade. All grades can be equally defect free, but each grade offers a distinct look. Higher grades of flooring have less mineral streaks, color variations and knots. Manufacturing defects do not include natural wood characteristics such as mineral streaks, knots, grain variations and a normal difference between colors.

Wood Flooring is a Natural Product

Wood is a natural product that will expand and contract over the course of the season. It is important to allow a one-inch space between the wood flooring and the wall of the room to allow for this expansion and contraction.

Beware of Moisture

Take moisture into consideration when installing hardwood flooring, since changes in moisture can create issues such as warping and gapping. To mitigate the effects of moisture, keep moisture levels within the manufacturer’s recommendations. For an added layer of protection against moisture, install a moisture barrier. Mullican’s moisture mat provides additional protection. Hardwood flooring is not recommended for bathrooms due to fluctuating moisture conditions.

Diablo Flooring,Inc : : : All about Carpet Fiber : : : Walnut Creek & Pleasanton CA

Here you will find information about the types of fiber used to make today's wall-to-wall carpet. Fibers used are nylon, polyester, triexta, olefin or polypropylene, wool, acrylic, cotton and rayon. Each fiber has its own set of characteristics that set it apart from the others. Also there are many different types of each fiber, and I will only explain the differences in types when they are important to your carpet purchase

NYLON

This is the most commonly used fiber in carpet today because it is strong, easy to dye, and readily available. If you have any traffic paths at all, AND the weight of the carpet you are buying is 32 ounces or less, I strongly recommend you buy a nylon carpet or the new triexta, and forget about PET or Olefin. There are many makers of fiber, but the leaders are Invista (formerly DuPont), Mohawk (formerly Solutia Wear Dated), BASF, and Shaw (formerly Allied Chemical). They all profess their nylon to be best. Invista and Mohawk(formerly Monsanto) have the most well known brands of nylon with the Stainmaster and Wear Dated types respectively.

Stainmaster nylon and Wear Dated nylon are simply triloble (cross grain magnified picture looks like a clover leaf) fibers with a fluorocarbon added to resist staining. Invista and Solutia have done a super job of marketing to convince you that theirs' is best. Also, their yarn is a type 6.6 nylon and is marketed as being "better" than type 6 nylon. However, recent studies by leading chemical engineers suggest that the differences between the two types have little to do with a carpet's overall performance, and further suggest that carpet construction is more important than fiber. The reason the consumer has to pay about $1.00/sq.yd. more for Stainmaster or Wear Dated than unbranded nylon fiber is that Invista and Mohawk spend millions of advertising dollars to convince you their fiber is better. This cost is passed on to the mill, and then to the dealer, and then to you. Invista did help the consumer by breaking their fiber quality into groups. The lowest quality Stainmaster is now Extra Body II; then Tactesse Stainmaster (provides a soft feel) , with Luxerell Stainmaster as their top of the line. If you really want the ultimate in SOIL hiding from a nylon look for Invista's Antron nylon. This fiber is only available in some residential styles. Your light-weight sparse carpet will not carry the Extra Body II label, heck it may not even carry the Stainmaster Label at all. Don't be confused. You can purchase a super tightly twisted, medium dense carpet that is multicolored to help hide traffic and soil, and you will love the way it looks new for years; it just will last even longer if the fiber is nylon.

NEW SOFT NYLONS:

The newest thing on the market is the introduction of the so called "soft nylons" This type of fiber has been around for a long time, but has always been more expensive because of how much of the fiber must go into the carpet in order to give the carpet a good feel (or hand). The fiber feels soft due to its super small diameter. Think of it like baby hair vs. corse hair; or better yet like gauges of wire. The small gauge wire is has a smaller diameter than the larger gauge wire. This is similar to nylon fiber; only instead of gauge we use the term "denier". The new soft feeling nylons are made from a very fine "denier" fiber. Thus, it takes a lot more of this fiber to feel and look like other carpets that may be full of air. Imagine fifteen very fat people in an elevator. The space is full, but there on only fifteen people inside. However, that same space can take 25 very thin people, and the combined strength of the 25 people will be stronger than the fifteen people. These new nylons will go under various brand names i.e. "Tactesse" and "Luxerell" (Invista) or "DuraSoft" (Mohawk), or "Anso Caress" (Shaw Industries). If you are willing to pay a little more for this fiber, I think you will love it,but just be sure to purchase one well constructed.

PET POLYESTER:

This is a new type of polyester fiber that has this long chemical name: Polyethylene Terephthalate, but still falls in the class of fibers known commonly as polyesters. This PET fiber, however, is "not your daddy's polyester". This fiber has natural and permanent stain resistance. PET fiber is stronger than the old polyester and has better abrasion resistance. Unlike the old polyester, the PET product has a higher melting point and is more resistant to abrasion.

The fiber is made from PET chips, some of which come from recycled plastic containers, hence the name "pop bottle carpet". Recycling does not affect the quality if the fiber, thus this product could be a future fiber that could be recycled over and over.

On a personal note, I had a customer spill hair dye on her 6 month old PET Polyester carpet. Hair dye is on the list of not warranted stains, but this lady got the stain out with a laundry detergent and water. I was impressed. Recently, some PET carpets have been produced in solution dyed form, and these are proving to be even more stain resistant.

TRIEXTA

This fiber is known as SMARTSTRAND (trademark) when marketed by Mohawk. Mowhawk recently received FTC apporval to market this fiber under its onwn class. This PTT fiber will now be know as TRIEXTA. In the future you will see more about this name change. This fiber is even stronger than PET polyester, and has better colorfastness and cleanability features than PET. PTT is as colorfast as solution dyed nylon. This fiber is extremely soft, and yet behaves better than staple nylon, especially in a shag construction. If you have kids and pets, and are going to be in the home more than 10 years, PTT is a good choice; especially the 3GT Sorona Dupont Polymer offered in some Mohawk carpets. I have not had a comsumer complaint on this fiber in the six years I have been selling it. By the way, PTT is just one step away chemically from 4GT polymer that is used to make tough auto parts. Triexta will indeed be a fiber for the future. Lookout Stainmaster!

OLEFIN or Polypropylene:

This is one of the most color fast fibers on the market. It also is one of the most naturally stain resistant. Thus, this fiber is best suited for indoor-outdoor carpet in both loop and grass styles. Olefin is a cheap fiber. It performs well in wear tests if the profile of the pile height is super low. If one adds air to the fiber to give it some bulk (so it feels good), it will not produce a carpet that looks good for longer than six months. This puffed up Olefin will crush! I guarantee it. Also, Olefin has such a low melting point it must have oil added to the fiber in order to survive the tufting process. When the carpet is finished, most American manufacturers do not spend the money to rid the fiber of all the oil. As a result the carpet crushes even quicker. The one exception to this process is a new type of olefin fiber called "Comfortouch" by Shaw Industries. This new fiber is softer to the feel because this olefin fiber is scoured three times during the making. Then the fiber is treated with R2X. The result is a fiber that feels like cotton, resists soil and stains , and wears better than other olefin carpet. My advice is to leave olefin to the outdoor market or light traffic indoors unless you are able to find a dealer who carries olefin carpets from Europe, or the new Comfortouch from Shaw. Those of you who have fallen in love with the Berber style of carpet make sure it is not made of polypropylene or olefin with the larger loops.

WOOL

If you are looking for your basic commodity carpet, do not expect to find it in wool. Wool makes excellent berber carpet, plush carpet, and frieze carpet. The best quality wool is from New Zealand. Wool naturally resists general soiling, crushing, and most stains. Wool is also naturally resistant to fire. Look for wool carpets made with jute backing (yes like the good old days) as it has a superior tuft bind. The soft look and the rich feel of wool is still unmatched by any man made fiber, and can be more affordable than you think. Wool carpet is indeed a long lasting luxury carpet.

ACRYLIC:

Acrylic fibers were popular for broadloom carpet in the 1960's. Acrylics look and feel a lot like wool. However, the fiber has a tendency to fuzz and pill. Some acrylic fiber is being revived by the mills for use in the popular berber style of carpet. I know that this "experiment" has not worked, and that most mills have once again stopped making residential carpets from acrylic fiber.

COTTON:

This long wearing fiber is still used in throw rugs and areas rugs. Not much is being used to make broadloom because of cotton's lack of crush resistance. In fact, cotton will flatten out even quicker than olefin. Also, cotton absorbs a great deal of moisture. This makes the fiber difficult to clean. Cotton rugs only look good if you can take them to the laundry to have washed. For wall to wall, forget buying a cotton carpet.

RAYON:

This fiber is seldom used for carpet. It has a low melting point and is hard to dye by today's modern methods. Rayon is best for different types of clothing, not carpet. Some inexpensive area rugs are made of rayon, and they are not designed for heavy traffic; as an ornament maybe!

1
Acquire a set of wood color samples for both your walls and flooring. If you are continuing with a floor that is in other parts of the house then only look at the single floor sample. Because the walls of the room are larger than the floor, the wall color will dominate the room. The room will look best if the two wood tones contrast or coordinate.

2
Position your sample board for the wall adjacent to the wood floor sample. A contrasting color is a distinct light choice and dark choice. A coordinating color is a lighter version of a similar wood tone paired with a darker version of the same tone. Combining a wood wall and floor in one room will tend to make a room look dark so consider a lighter wood color for the walls to reduce this tendency.

3
Separate wood samples that have similar underlying colors. Many types of wood have a red, amber or yellow appearance when finished. When these woods are paired the overall effect will be red or orange. The other group of wood will often have a brown undertone creating a brown overall effect.

4
Counteract overly dark wood walls with additional light fixtures, skylights and windows. Use furniture that combines both wood colors to unify the color choices. Bring dark wood accents up onto light wood shelves or light wood accents to dark panel walls.

5
Use rugs, upholstery, art and textiles to further unify the different wood tones. Add a rug and furniture in lighter tones. This will reflect light and reduce the closed in feeling. Select upholstery and textiles that have a pattern that incorporates some or all of the colors in the room. This will help unify the different woods and other colors. Avoid large expanses of solid color on furniture pieces since you already have two strong solid color surfaces. A sofa's color can be broken up with texture as well as pattern.

6
Select large art pieces that will contrast against the wall. Some of the color of the art piece should also be used elsewhere in the room either as an accent color or incorporated into the upholstery or textile patterns.

7
Position accents that have mirrored or reflective surfaces to further bounce light around and to add lightness to the room. Use pops of color in artwork to draw the eye upward.

Tips & Warnings
Avoid using brown on brown furniture as the distinctive qualities of the furniture will become lost in a sea of sameness. Use different textures to add depth to the room

Diablo Flooring,Inc : WHY we need to Buy Local & Shop Local : Pleasanton,CA : Danville,CA : Walnut Creek,CA

Shopping local and independent sounds nice, but we Americans like to save a buck. We like convenience. And, judging from the proliferation of big box chains, we like consistency.

So why go out of our way to ‘shop-local-first’? It goes like this : when you spend your dollars at an independent, local business, you keep more money in your hometown—supporting your community’s social services, schools, your public library and local non-profits. How so? Locally-owned businesses return about 80% of each dollar to their community. And each dollar spent at a local business will return up to five times that amount within your community through city taxes, employees’ wages, and purchases of materials, supplies and services at other independent businesses.

Chains and franchises, on the other hand, contribute roughly 40%, and as little as 20% of sales back to your community. And many big boxes, such as Walmart or Home Depot, are given tax-incentives by local governments—costing you far more than the discounted price you think you’re paying.

Diablo Flooring,Inc : Caring for your WOOL Carpet

Diablo Flooring,Inc : Pleasanton - Danville,CA - Walnut Creek,CA

Caring for your carpet

The natural attributes of New Zealand wool help keep your Wools of New Zealand branded carpets looking good for longer:

  • The naturally scaly surface of wool makes it naturally resistant to soiling. Soil will be held high in the carpet pile where it can be easily removed by vacuuming.
  • Wool has natural elasticity so it stands up to everyday wear and tear and resists unsightly crushing from furniture.
  • Wool has a natural protective outer layer that prevents water-based spills from penetrating into the fiber.

Combined with an effective maintenance plan, these natural attributes make it easy to look after your Wools of New Zealand branded carpet or rug.

All you have to do is follow the three simple steps set out below:

STEP 1: VACUUMING

When it comes to keeping your carpet looking good and hygienically clean, you can never vacuum too often. As a rule, vacuum at least once a week, more often in heavy traffic areas. Be thorough – vacuum under furniture, behind curtains and where your carpet meets the wall.

Quick tips:

  • Be sure your vacuum cleaner is suitable for your type of carpet. Follow the advice of the carpet manufacturer or your retailer.
  • If your vacuum has a bag, empty it regularly to ensure the vacuum doesn't lose suction.

STEP 2: CLEAN SPILLS IMMEDIATELY

Stains can be prevented easily by ACTING QUICKLY when spills occur. Even when time is not on your side, follow this simple removal process, use the correct cleaning agent, and you'll be delighted with the difference you can make.

Scoop, Blot, Clean, Rinse and Blot Dry

DO NOT RUB OR SCRUB YOUR WOOL CARPET AS THIS CAN CAUSE PERMANENT PILE DISTORTION.

Type of treatment

  1. Cold water.
  2. One teaspoon of wool detergent (for example, Softly) and one litre of warm water.
  3. Clear household disinfectant.
  4. Dry cleaning solvent such as White Spirit or Murlex (Available from hardware stores). Use only on dry carpet.
  5. Chill with ice cubes in a plastic bag. Pick or scrape off gum.
  6. Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of water.
  7. Warm water.
  8. Nail polish remover (should not contain lanolin).
  9. Surgical alcohol.
  10. Place absorbent paper over wax and apply hot iron to paper. Wax will melt and be absorbed by the paper.
  11. Vacuum clean.
  12. Mineral turpentine.
  13. Seek assistance from a professional carpet cleaner.

STEP 3: PROFESSIONAL CLEANING
