In my perusal of the Shaw floors tips and trends, I noticed this helpful little booklet on “A Woman’s Guide to Flooring” underneath the question “Not Sure Where to Start?”. Click here to download now!
The guide has some fabulous tips such as determining the functionality of the room and the personality you’re trying to create, and gathering swatches that meet these choices. There are a number of flooring types available: carpet, ceramic tile, hardwood floors, laminate flooring, and area rugs.
Style 101 in the guide lists four different styles to help you choose your floors: modern, retro, natural, and fashion-inspired. I feel like there are many more styles than just these, but it’s a start. More flooring tips and trends mark the end of the booklet, listing tips like pleasing the eyes and the feet with your flooring, not to be afraid of color (also see Shaw’s “Color Cues”), going green, and layering up.

Drying of the Wood:
The MIRAGE factory operates on site, all the kilns to dry the lumber to exacting standards necessary to produce their flooring, thus controls everything from log to finished product. Before it is made into flooring, every board is then tested for the correct moisture content! This avoids cracks showing up afterwards, when unusually wet boards decide to finish drying in your house. All warehouses and production facilities are humidity controled to maintain the correct moisture content in the flooring while waitng to be delivered to your job site.
Milling the perfect tongue & groove:
The strips are always manufactured perfectly straight, with a constant thickness and width offering you a perfect tongue and groove fit. These high manufacturing standards and quality control assure an easy and worry-free installation and you save on installation time. Wastage is virtually eliminated.
Sanding that brings out the beauty of the wood:
All flooring is premounted into panels for table top style sanding. This offers superior sanding accuracy with the smallest and most uniform MICRO-V joints in the industry. Each board then becomes the exact same thickness as its partner, laying a floor that feels good on your feet.
Staining to highlight the diverse grain patterns:
Stains are applied uniformly across the wood, as well as in the MICRO-V joints, to bring out the beauty of the grain in each native and exotic wood species.
Each colour is tested with a digital camera, to guarantee the accuracy of colour match with the previous batch of flooring. This is a great advantage, when you want to install some flooring today, and continue the job further down the road. MIRAGE guarantees the accuracy of colour from batch to batch, thus it is not necessary to get all your flooring from the same "dye lot".
The Finish, for maximun durability:
An aluminium oxide compound is suspended in an ultraviolet cured polyurethane, for amazing protection and more abrasion resistance to wear then the historical polyurethanes. Ten coats of this finish are applied to every strip of flooring. The finish is sanded, buffed and UV cured for maximum adhesion to the wood and long lasting durability. The finish is tested for adhesion, thickness and shine level, guaranting you the same quality and shine on every batch. This is supported by a residential 25 year finish warranty.
Today they have gone one step further and become the first hardwood flooring manufacturer to use nano-technology in their floor finish... this is well beyond my technical knowledge to comprehend, but what I do know is that it eliminates much of the shatter crack lines typical when something is dropped on the surface. Working With Patterned Carpet: A Designer's Perspective
Flooring is the cornerstone of any design scheme. Once you decide on the carpeting or rug, then the wall color, window treatment, fabrics and furnishings can fall into place. Flooring is also an integral ingredient in setting the style of a room: Choose an animal print, like Bagira from the Shalimar collection, for an exotic, sophisticated look; or La Jolla from the California collection for a contemporary and comfortable look. What’s on the floor—whether it’s a solid color or an elaborate pattern—will create the mood for an entire space.
Pattern is an important consideration when choosing a carpet and there are many reasons to give it special attention. Practically speaking, it can hide a multitude of spills, spots and wear. Even a subtle pattern, created by varying textures for example, will help to conceal blemishes. Pattern adds detail to a room, whether it’s geometric, floral or a simple check. It also brings character and complexity to the overall design.

Some patterns complement certain furniture styles. Geometric patterns, for example, are often used in the Art Deco style; look at Clearwater in the Florida collection or Deco in the Dimensions collection. A formal, traditional room will have carpeting with a classic, decorative pattern like Charles II from the Royal Sovereign collection—such timeless designs are often similar to those found in antique Oriental and European rugs. Designing with pattern requires some thought. It would be difficult to make a space work when the carpet, walls and fabric in a room all have different wild designs competing with each other. It’s much better when patterns work with each other. If there’s a primary fabric in a room that has a big bold print, then consider a simple pattern, such as a check or diamond, for the carpeting. Scale must be considered as well—if a carpet has a large scale pattern, then other patterns in the room should probably be smaller. Along the same vein, if the carpeting has a floral design, it’s a good idea to steer away from competing floral patterns in the room and consider small prints, stripes and solids for furniture and window treatments.

How To Clean Hardwood Flooring
Your hardwood floor is installed. Your house finally feels like a home. But now what? How do you care for your new investment?
Meet Mat
Floor mats are a wonderful thing when it comes to hardwood floors. Tiny particles, like dirt, can act like sandpaper and scratch your wood. By placing a floor mat at each entryway and encouraging family members and guests to wipe their feet, the majority of dirt and grime will remain on the mat. Also put a floor mat or rug in any area where water could be splashed — like near the kitchen sink. This will hinder any possible water damage.
Note that rubber-backed or non-ventilated floor mats or rugs can damage your floor. Instead use floor mats or rugs made especially for hardwood floors and be sure to shake them out regularly.
Whistle While You Work
Along with a hardwood floor comes the responsibility of keeping it clean. The better care you take, the longer your floor will maintain its original beauty. Step one is to purchase a high quality broom so that you can sweep your floor regularly of dirt, dust and other particles.
Second step is a vacuum cleaner without a beater bar, to get in between the boards and other hard to reach areas.
Deeper cleaning techniques vary depending on the installation and finish of your hardwood floor. For “Finish in Place” hardwood floors, using an 8”x14” terrycloth mop with a rotating head that makes cleaning corners, under cabinets and along base boards as simple as pie is recommeded.
Professional cleaning products recommended by Diablo Flooring can be used to remove tough stains and spills without dulling the finish of your wood floor. Makers of “Pre-finished” floors recommend their own specific products for routine maintenance. Check with us for details.
Do and Don’ts
Don’t wax a wood floor with a urethane finish
Do use cleaners that won’t leave a film or residue
Don’t use ammonia cleaners or oil soaps on a wood floor — they’ll dull the finish and affect your ability to recoat later.
Do use a professional hardwood floor cleaner to remove occasional scuffs and heel marks (just spray some cleaner on a cloth and rub the stained area lightly)
Don’t wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor (wood naturally expands when it’s wet and can cause your floor to crack or splinter). For information on steam cleaning hardwood floors, see our blog post on Floor Talk.
Do clean sticky spots with a damp towel or sponge
Do minimize water exposure and clean spills immediately
Go Deep
If and when your hardwood floor begins to look like it belongs beneath the feet of gold miners in an old western saloon, it’s time to consider screening and recoating.
Screening is the process used to abrade or grind down your floor’s polyurethane finish. Next, fresh coats of urethane are applied. The result is a rejuvenated floor that looks as good as the day it was installed!
If the damage to your hardwood floor is severe, then you may require sanding and refinishing. This process involves sanding your floor down to the bare wood and refinishing it. Only go to this effort if screening and recoating doesn’t solve your problem. Replacement boards may be available so you don’t have to refinish the entire area. Be sure to go pro whenever you have work done on your hardwood floors!
Protect Your Investment
All hardwood floors fade or change shades over time. Like our own skin, wood’s exposure to sunlight may greatly increase this process and cause permanent damage.
Window treatments are recommended to shade your floors from the sun’s harsh rays. We also recommend rotating area rugs and furniture regularly, allowing wood floors to age evenly from UV exposure.
To avoid permanent marks and scratches, it’s a good idea to cover furniture and table legs with flannel protectors. Be careful when moving heavy objects across your floor to avoid scuffing.
Ladies — your stiletto heels may be fashionable, but what’s not in fashion (or covered by your warranty) are the dents and scratches they cause to wood floors. Likewise, trim your pet’s nails regularly and keep any and all other sharp objects away from your floors.
